Mostly they are known as the radio or wireless microphones and it is because their original audio cables were done away with and replaced with some other frequency transmitter method. They use radio waves like FM, AM, UHF, VHF and other digital methods.

The higher types have many frequencies for transmission and they hardly get clogged up or get any interference from other electric transmitters that could be within the same range of frequency. That is why they allow a number of microphones to be used simultaneously.

Initially, these mics were of compander microphone development which started all the way in 1976, and operated by Nady Systems. They became famous in 1996 when they got an Emmy for the technical advancement and contribution to the technological world.

Their numerous advantages range from their hygienic state that enables the user to keep health and safety rules while at work. They are not exposed to unhygienic conditions that the microphone codes used to impose on people who used them as they trailed along every imaginable surface.

They are now very convenient if one is moving around with them because they have no codes. Actually the codes attached to the old type of microphones used to be pulled and tagged too much. This tended to cause damage very easily to the microphone itself plus the cable too.

They might have more advantages but they also have disadvantages too. They use very expensive battery types as they require much more power than people think.

Their signals do not cover a long range and they are normally interrupted by other electric gadgets around them. This can only be overcome by getting very strong and powerful batteries which would automatically add to your cost.

This problem of frequency interference always causes a concern and can necessitate that one reduces the number of microphones that can be used in one area or within a given range.

More advanced models will allow you to select various frequencies to transmit over, helping avoid interference with other electrical transmitters that might be using the same frequency, and also enabling the use of multiple microphones at the same time.

Using radio mics is very advantageous for the user. A starting advantage is that radio mics eliminate the health and safety risk of trailing microphone cables. Secondly, and as a result of this, you give the freedom of movement to the wearer of the microphone as they are not joined via a cable. Another plus point is that you no longer stress any cables by flexing them, which can frequently result in damage.

Disadvantages of Radio Microphones

Despite having such advantages, wireless microphones also have some select disadvantages. Firstly the two way radio batteries used do not always last very long as the radio microphones are very thirsty when it comes to power consumption. Radio mics are also hampered by range, with the furthest signals normally only achieved by the larger, more expensive models. Interference from another electrical appliance is also a possibility which would lead to a disruption of the signal. Finally, to avoid being on the same frequency and clashing, you are limited to the number of radio microphones you can use.

Audio mikes that used the cables for signal transmissions have long since been replaced with wireless mikes. Also called Radio mikes, they use radio frequency technology to transmit the audio signals. They are capable of sending signals through FM, AM, UHF, VHF and various digital formats.

The most modern mike sets come equipped with frequency selection modes with which you can set the required frequency without having interference from other transmitters operating at the same frequency band nearby. You are now able to use multiple microphones too at the same time.

The current radio microphones owe their origin to the first original compander microphone that was built by Nady Systems in 1976. He was honored with Emmy award in 1996 in honor of his contribution to the field of technology.

Radio mikes are wireless and hence it is easier for the performers to use them on stage and it is a lot safer too when compared to the wires and cables dangling from wired mikes.

The Radio mikes being wireless have provided freedom of movement and performance to the artists who perform on stage. They can freely move across the stage without having to drag or bother with the cables. The handling staff too need not bother with managing and joining cables etc.

Though Radio mikes are very good, there is yet one disadvantage when it comes to the battery life. The radio batteries tend to get drained out very fast and do not last long. The reason being that the radio microphones use up more power and drain the batteries in no time.

Radio mikes operate within a certain range only. This could be a drawback and you might have to buy higher end equipment to get wider range. Then there is also the risk of disruption of signals due to other equipments being used in the same frequency in near by area.

Many times you will be constrained to use fewer numbers of microphones to be able to retain the clarity and avoid clashing of frequency.
